If you’ve never faced the anxiety that comes with wondering how you’ll feed your family, then this ministry may pass by you unnoticed. The term food insecurity may not register with you. But the fact is that in 2013, approximately 50,000 Madison County residents had limited access to nutritious food or uncertainty about adequate food supply.
Let’s bring it closer to home. This past holiday season, over 1,100 holiday food boxes were distributed through the Asbury Food Pantry. These staple items allowed families to prepare a special home cooked a meal for their loved ones Thanksgiving and Christmas. In the last three months, 145 food boxes have been distributed. The overwhelming majority of them were given to families in need in Madison. At 40 pounds per box, this means approximately 5,800 pounds of food has been purchased, donated, sorted, packaged, and distributed in just the past five months. And those numbers are for food boxes alone. This doesn’t include the other food bags given to students over the weekend during the school year. Currently, 100 bags of food are delivered to students in three schools within a two-mile radius of Asbury. Every month, snack bags are prepared and given to our homeless friends and neighbors at Tent City.
For two decades, many faithful volunteers have kept the Asbury Food Pantry running smoothly. Individual families take on the responsibility for a month by packing food boxes and restocking supplies, serving on mission together – as a family. Sunday school classes and other small groups serve in this ministry as well. This endeavor reaches beyond Asbury’s walls as other numerous groups within our community participate. Area churches, scouting groups, youth groups, high school service organizations, and others host food drives to keep the pantry stocked. Various groups also participate by packing boxes and bags of food as they learn what it means to serve others.
So as you prepare meals for yourself or your family this week, stop and give thanks for God’s provision. And while you’re at it, say a prayer of thanksgiving for this week’s mission partner, the Asbury Food Pantry. Pray that God will give them direction as they seek to serve in the name of Christ.
“Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who take refuge in him.” Psalm 34:8
