For more than 30 years, the Downtown Rescue Mission (DRM) has served those who are homeless throughout northern Alabama and southern Tennessee. The DRM is able to provide emergency services to anyone in need, as well as hot meals, overnight shelter, clean clothes, showers, free laundry services and toiletries. People who are served by the DRM also have the opportunity to join an extensive substance abuse recovery program located on site.

Asbury has participated in many ways with this life-changing ministry over the years. Each Wednesday night, DRM hosts a chapel service for the residents, where different individuals and groups from Asbury have been able to plan and lead worship services. There is nothing quite like worshipping our God and Deliverer with people who are in the midst of experiencing God’s deliverance from deep brokenness – a vivid reminder that we are all in need of God’s deliverance. One Saturday a month, an Asbury team serves a meal for residents, a great way to get plugged into this ministry. It is a truly moving experience to attend a Downtown Rescue Mission graduation to join in celebrating how God is setting people free!

One Asbury member shares this about her experience serving the children at the mission:

I was blessed to watch two brothers transition over time from quiet and shy, not being able to speak any English, to outgoing, friendly and funny, and talking non-stop in English, having friends. Their mother was eventually able to move them all out of the mission into a place of their own. Residents changing their lives so they can live on their own and not in the shelter is a main goal and it does happen, which is a blessing.
